Why is my Windows 7 update is taking so long?

I just shut down my computer and its installing the updates, and the update is installing 1 0f 10 update and its taking about more than an hour already, if I switched it off my Laptop might experience too many errors.. I’m using Windows 7 Professional…
I have over 100,000 error messages on my Vista laptop taking up lots of memory, how do I erase theme?
