What should I do if I have a “Disk Read Error” Message when I boot up my laptop?

I have a Toshiba Laptop Satelite. Whenever I turn on my computer I get this black screen which says “Disk Read Error – Press Ctrl-ALt-Del.” Can this problem be fixed?? What should I do to reslove this problem.

I just had a similar problem with my Gateway laptop.

It turned out that my hard drive was fried and since my computer was still under warranty, they mailed me a new one.

You need to determine if your motherboard is detecting your hard drive. That can be done by going into the Bios Option when your computer first boots up (usually accessed by one of the F keys or by the delete button). If there is something under “Primary IDE” or “Primary Master” then that means your hard drive IS being detected and it could just be a driver problem.

If it is not being detected, then for sure your hard drive is damaged and you need to buy a new one.

If your computer is still under warranty, just call the manufacturer. If not, take it to Best Buy or CompUSA for repairs.

A bit outdated but it could also be a floppy disk in your drive if you sill use one. Or a bootable CD that was corrupted could be in your CD ROM drive.

If it’s not one of them then its your hard drive.
