When I turn on my laptop, as it’s booting up, it tells me “north bridge FAN error” and tells me to hit F1 to continue, plus it’s making a dreadful racket.
I want to fix it, but I don’t want to bring it to a repair shop. Can I just unscrew the laptop and fix the north bridge FAN? And what is a north bridge FAN?

Yeh sure u can unscrew the laptop and put in a new fan.
Its literally jus taking the old fan out, duznt matter if u accidentally rip out a motherboard-looking thing, its not important.
Then u can jus tape a new fan onto it. My personal favourite and the one I have on my laptop right now is found here http://store.onestopshopcatalog.net/mc-42.html
After that you can realize that that was incredably stupid and TAKE IT INTO A SHOP
It’s a little pinwheel-type rotary device that blows air on the north bridge chip. Seriously, one of the fans in the laptop is going bad – that’s the noise. It might be possible for you to replace it yourself – it depends on how much you have to disassemble to get to it. You’ll have to buy the replacement from the laptop manufacturer.
If you don’t know what it is, then you don’t want to risk fixing it yourself. Laptop repair is generally more difficult then a normal PC.
Bottom line – take it to a repair shop. You’ll need a specialized replacement fan.
the north bridge and the south bridge are you main cpu’s. If there is a problem with fan it needs to be replaced asap. If there is a proble with one of the bridges you might have lost some of your files. I hope you have all your stuff backed up on some other software or Mozy.. You can check the bios on your computer to see what’s going on. If you want to change out your fan, I suggest you watch you tube videos on how to do it. Im a computer hardware student and I watch those videos all the time, because Im a visual learner. I hope my answer was you were looking for..
I would suggest opening the case and checking to see if theres something causing the blockage. I dont know about your model specificly, but mine moves a good amount of air, and in just a fwe monts of constant use, it has built up a baby dust monster. Cant hurt to check after all, since tech support wont give you the time of day. Could be that the fan is really on its last legs. Again, not being familiar with your specific model, I dno’t know how easy it would be to replace that fan…but i couldn’t imagine it would be too difficult.
The North bridge chip has a fan on it!. Yours either needs lube or it needs to be replaced! It will be under the keyboard and it’ll be the chip that’s a bit smaller than the processor! A precision oiler usually will do the job, but don’t use but a tiny drop!

it is possible, to remove the fan and replace, but laptops are sometimes incredibly difficult to take apart, and hard to find the correct components. Even taking it into the shop can cost more than its worth if the laptop is more than a year or two old. The Northbridge is the graphics and memory controller on your motherboard, if the fan goes out it may overheat and fry the board. look at the cost to have repairs and if it costs more than $200 or so I’d buy a new laptop, also check your warranty, ignore the first person’s response. There is always a polite way to say things.
You might be able to fix it. It sounds like it’s just starting to go — fans make a terrible sound when they do. Whether you can fix it, depends on your comfort level with opening up a laptop. It’s usually not as easy as opening up a desktop PC. So, the northbridge (for your edification) is a chip, and its primary function is your memory controller — so it’s a pretty important piece. The northbridge fan cools your northbridge chip — you want it to be cool. I can’t tell you which kind of fan they’re using for your particular northbridge, but if it’s field-replaceable, then there’s a chance you might be able to find a replacement at a local electronics store (like a Radio Shack, or Fry’s). Just pop it out if you can, and take it with you — someone should be able to help you find the right one. Good luck.
