Question from : How to run Halo Combat Evolved on XP (problem)?
Okay, I’ve got a problem with running Halo 1 on Windows XP. When I run the game the screen turns black for a second then it crashes back to desktop (without any error). I installed every patch avaible (including 1.08) but still can’t open the game. What can I do? (Game is original, not downloaded)

What are your specs for your PC? Is this a new download to your PC? Did you have installed before and its not running all of a sudden? I would uninstall and reinstall first. If the problem persists go to Bungie’s forums and see if there are others with the same issue. Here’s the link.

Control Panel>Sound>Sounds Tab – Disable Windows Sounds here.

Sound coming from the internal speakers (like the missing keyboard, hit f1 to continue when you bootup) cant be disabled.

I use autopatcher for updates, I cant stand that little red shield in the tray telling me to turn updates on.

1. Click control panel, then Security Center.
2. Then in Resources click, change the way security center alerts me.
3. Uncheck the box that says Automatic Updates…that will fix that and remove the flashing icon.

Windows XP Problem. When I turn on the computer it goes to the start up menu and no matter what I choose(reboot normally,previous setup,safe mode) it just returns to start up again.?What should i do? Its a dell system.

personally id disconnect all the unnecessary things like dvd/cd drives leave your boot hard drive in there at first then try and boot the machine. select safe mode and see if it gets any further. If not disconnect the hard drive as well and turn on and see if it can just stay on, so this would check to see if the problem was related to overheating or power supply etc.
also if you need to check a pc its always handy to have a live linux cd you can pop into the cd drive and boot up from as this will eliminat the vast majority of the pc and you can use the linux os to repair / c heck hard disc drive..

I get this message at boot up on XP: Message: Windows- No Disk Exception Processing Message C0000013 Parameters 75b6bf7c It’s very difficult to make disappear, but finally does ’til the NEXT start up. It happened after I upgraded to Internet Explorer 8. How do I fix this?

I can offer you a solution and fix to this one

I’m willing to guess it is being caused by a program called dit.exe which is installed by some card reader software to allow you to name the drives and for them to have individual icons.

It runs on startup and is a pretty much useless process.

Initially you should test to see if it is causing you problems.

Run msconfig and if it appears in your startup list disable it and restart

if that solves your problem then delete dit.exe from your windows folder (you can also get rid of dit.dll, dit.ini and ditxp.exe)

You should now do a registry sweep to get rid of any dit.exe entries
