Can I Repair My Printer?

Start with your physical connection. The data plugs have changed over time.  It used to be a parallel cable. Although it worked the demand for speed was increasing.  Manufactures came up with USB (universal Service Bus) connections.  This also gave the user the ability to connect over one hundred device to the same port.  The speed was faster also. In any case be sure which one you have and that they are securely fastened.  If you have a spare try a different one. Cable can go bad but not very often.

Here are steps to take if you made sure you plugs are all good and that they are plugged in securely.
1. Be sure it is turned on 2. Be sure it has not run out of paper or that it isn’t jammed. 3. Most newer printers will give you an error message either on the computer and/or on the printer itself.  4. Be sure your power strip is plugged in and that it is on if you have it plugged into one. 5. Reinstall your driver.  There is a small chance that the program for the printer became corrupt or disabled.

If the above steps do not repair the problem find a different computer to put the printer on.  There could be something wrong in your operating system.  As an example: a Virus can disable devices or make a program not run.

If the printer goes through its motions (physically moves and seems like it is trying to print) you could just be out of ink.  They don’t last forever.  Some printers will not run at all if the ink is to low. This is the one thing people try to get away with.  I have seen many times that I just put a new ink cartridge in and it worked.  If you have a laser jet, remove the cartridge and shake it a couple of times.  You can print a large number of copies after that but you will eventually have to replace it. New laser jet printers come with an introductory cartridge that contains less ink than the replacement cartridges.

If you find that your printer is really bad just replace it.  They are very cheap these days. They are extremely costly to fix.  If your local area has a recycling program or a way to dispose of them do it. If you send it in to be fixed expect to pay more than a new one would cost.

Also, if you upgraded from XP or a later version of Windows you may need to get the latest drive (program) for the printer.  Vista is picky about using old driver and mostly they don’t work. Go to the Manufacturer’s web site.  The drivers are there plus other information that may help you.

If the information I gave you isn’t adequate try using a search engine.  There is a lot of information out there.  I have no way to cover every possible problem on every possible printer problem in this article.

Direct Mail Printer versus a General One

With so many printing companies posing as experts and professionals, it is so hard these days to really get a good printer. One that can give you quality services necessary for your marketing campaign, be it business card printing or brochure printing.

With most of the expenditures of businesses focused on printing their marketing materials such as custom business cards, it is not surprising that there have been a deluge of so-called printing experts even if what they have is a running website and the latest hi-tech printers.

In addition, to make matters worse, these so-called expert printers are willing to even make their prices go even lower just so they can get as many clients to their business. However, when it comes to direct mail marketing, do these printers really know what they are talking about? Would they be able to provide you with the right marketing strategy to help you mount an effective direct mail campaign?

A professional and expert direct mail printer can make it easy for you to have quality printed pieces that would attract and generate leads to your business. Here are three of the reasons why you should pick a printer that specializes on direct mail rather than a general provider who will not be able to distinguish the best means for you to increase your popularity.

1- General printers do not understand the mechanics of a “complete direct mail package”. This means being able to understand the importance of every element and each of the process, from the approval of the proof to the printing of your job order, to inserting your marketing materials inside their envelopes and finally distributing them to your target clients.

A direct mail expert would know how significant it is to have the right envelope printing for example to your marketing campaign. Even as seemingly insignificant as the placing of the window in your envelope, a direct mail provider knows what position can give you the most positive response.

2- General printers are not concerned with cost efficiencies. This includes having to decide whether to go for a 1-up format or a multi-up. A direct mail printer would be familiar with variable data imaging and can provide you with fewer costs to the process with fewer delays to the project. These in turn can help you not only to save on your marketing budget, but they will also help you to maximize your direct mail collaterals.

3- Direct mail printers know how important it is to have short timelines. This means having short and quick turnarounds so you can put your marketing campaign in the mail as quickly as possible. Direct mail marketing works on short timelines as compared to long regular turnarounds for ordinary print runs. Hence, a general printer may not understand your need for a shorter and much faster turnaround and will be able to do your requirement but with additional costs.

Therefore, the next time you are thinking of picking any printer you encounter, stop and make a reassessment of your marketing requirements first. If you need to have your marketing materials at a much quicker time and with less cost to you, you might want to get a direct mail printer. A direct mail provider can surely help you save your budget and prevent you from committing major errors that can cost you your business.

Good Habits When Dealing With Online Printers

Online printing has always been the fast and easy option to print your materials. If you are like me, you may already be addicted and you print your promotional materials, business cards and other paperwork with a trusted online printer. That is why I already have formed a few good habits when dealing with online printers. In this article, I will share you a few of these good habits. These habits will help you talk to your favorite online printer faster and make the whole process more manageable for both of you.

Check your file formats: First and foremost is the design file format. Many different online printers prefer certain kinds of file formats that they can process. So it is important to know, what your online printer prefers to receive which will make the whole printing process faster. For most online printers, file formats like Adobe Photoshop Documents, Quark Xpress files and even Microsoft Publisher files are ideal for use in their printers. With this type of format, they can easily edit or change the properties of the design so that they can adapt it for printing. Some though can make do with image files of your design such as JPG, PNG or BMP formats, which they can pass on to the printer immediately. However, image files can only be altered to a point which makes them less than ideal to send, especially if there are mistakes in the design. So, by knowing what file format your online printer uses, they can easily get the job done and delivered to you in no time problems or no problems. So it pays to know the best file format initially when you hire an online printer.

Check image resolutions: Next, are your image resolutions. As was touched on above, you can actually send an image file to your online printer for printing. Before sending it up though, it is a must to check your image resolution. The resolution basically refers to how detailed your images are per dot or line. Higher resolutions give good quality images, while lower ones look worse. So if you are sending something to an online printer for your design, you can make sure that it will look good by giving them a high resolution image of your design. The industry standard for printing is 300 dots per inch in terms of resolution.

Update your printing quotations: Also, don’t forget to update, refresh or ask once again about the rates of printing, or printing quotations for your usual printed works. In most cases, through several months printing prices might actually fluctuate depending on moderate demands. You do not want to be late in the news and send too little money for your printing job. So try to update your information about printing quotations first before entering into a transaction again. This is just so that you do not get too surprised if the rates go up or down.

Triple check your details: Another habit that you should form is to triple check all your printed content. The worst thing that can happen is if you have a typographical error or even a major design flaw get multiplied hundreds of times through printing. By triple checking your content you avoid this from happening and you save several hundred dollars in reprinting costs if it ever comes do that.

Confirm by phone: Lastly, do not be afraid to confirm your order by phone. You must always want to make sure that your printing order is indeed being done by people. So try to ask information about where the order is at, the estimated time of arrival by delivery and of course the tracking number. This should be an assurance that your printing job is well on its way to production.

So integrate these habits when you can when doing online printing. These habits should save you quite a bit of time and worrying as you do business with online printers.

My Tricks Regarding Online Printers

Online printers have advantages and disadvantages that are inherent in any kind of online service. That is why for a growing number of people out there, it is important to know how to do online printing while minimizing the chance of errors and dangers popping up with regards to online transactions. As a professional who has been printing many things for business, I can share with you these five tricks regarding finding and transacting with online printers.

Do not be fooled by the website – First off, do not be fooled by printing company websites. Some may look very impressive and professional while others may look like it came from a template, but do not be fooled by appearances. Almost anyone these days can make a very professional looking website, but the trick is that you must not judge by looks alone. The true test of an online printing company is in their sample prints, and their printing quotations. For example, an online printer might have the best looking website that you have found, but they may charge more expensive rates for medium quality products. Simpler websites on the other hand may be able to offer you the same deal with almost no difference in quality but at a cheaper price. So the rule here is to check under the hood and see the online printing company’s options and work. Do not be dazzled by their website.

Always contrast and compare – Secondly, you must always compare all the online printers that you have researched. Never settle for the first one you see. There are a lot of cheap printing deals to be had if you search thoroughly for online printers. Just get the three important facts about online printers as you research them. Look at their prices or printing quotations, and then look at their sample printing and quality. Finally read reviews and opinions about the online printer through forums and blogs. If you do your research right you should identify the best online printing services out there for your own printing job.

Use instant quotation forms extensively – Next, when looking for good printers, try to play with the instant quotation forms extensively. Most online printers usually have a form in their websites which you can use to input various printing options. You can mix and match these options to get the best quality prints that you need at the price that you are willing to pay for. Do not rely on most of the recommendations of other online printers since they usually will sell you more luxury options than needed. So play with the options and set the best configuration for you. You won’t regret customizing all the options yourself.

Always call for confirmation – Also as a vital tip, always call up the online printer for confirmation. You always want to be sure the website is real by calling their contact number, confirming the arrival of your transaction and learning its status. This should let you know that the website is indeed backed up by a real printing company and you can monitor your order as it goes about the printing process.

Secret tip: Using small online printers – Finally as a small tip, you don’t have to print using the big online printers if you do not want to. Some of the simpler online printing companies can offer very cheap rates for your prints. Since they do not spend much in promotions and bandwidth, you should be able to get the prints you want in decent quality for a cheaper price. As long as you do your homework above you will be benefiting from very easily produced and cheap prints.

Just use these simple tricks and you won’t have to worry too much about hiring online printers. In time you should have a few favorite online printing companies that have the best quality and price that is perfect for your business.
