In our traffic series of articles, we’ve already covered the writing forms of advertising for traffic–blogging and articles. This time, let’s go on to a way to get traffic without the need to write–podcasting, a great alternative.
Your first piece of equipment will be your headset and microphone. Be sure that the product you choose is comfortable to wear and that the sound it produces is clear. Most of them will probably work OK, but you have to decide which one is right for you. You can find headsets on eBay, at Amazon.com, or in any store that carries electronic items.
Then, you’ll need some recording software. You can find shareware and freeware out there, for you to try and buy. Try a few of the different programs and play with the functions until you find the program that ’s right for you. Just be sure that the program has editing capability because you will need that feature at times. You don’t need to make a pristine recording, but big bloopers should be edited out or you won’t seem very professional. Some slight errors may make your recording seem spontaneous, though, so don’t go overboard on editing things out.
Yet, have a plan of action before just talking randomly into the mic. Make a loose outline or a mindmap that will give you a general path to follow. You needn’t make it too detailed or regimented or you could lose your creativity. Just be sure that you have a direction, and if need be, you can edit for length later on.
Try to keep your podcasts to around half an hour at the longest and five minutes at the short end. Though you’ll find podcasts that are shorter and longer, when you’re providing information to people used to moving at the Internet’s fast pace, try to pack as much information into as little time as possible. You can always break your podcasts down into a series, if you feel that you’ve gone too long.
Once your podcast is recorded and edited, you’ll need to convert it to the .mp3 format, if it’s a .wav or other type of audio file. You can go to a software site like Tucows.com to find converter software or just plug “.mp3 file converter” into Google and see what you come up with. The reason you need to do this is so that you’re compatible with the podcasting sites, and that’s the platform Apple iPods run on, hence the name–podcast.
After you have your .mp3 file, you’re ready to upload. Sites like Google Base and Sweetwater accept podcasts, as does iTunes, but they’re just 3 of many places that do this. These are places like YouTube that accept audio files, rather than videos. However, at some of the video places, you can upload podcasts, too. The main issue is finding a site that will house the podcast files for you. When you do a lot of them, they will take up a lot of room if you house them on your own server. Either have lots of room on your own host, or find a site that not only allows you to upload a link to your podcast, but that actually houses the podcast file for you. Once you’re decided on where the files will be stored, then don’t forget to upload the podcast to your blog, too.
Podcasts can also be set up on RSS feeds like blogs. You can do it at places like FeedBurner can help to with that. You can also get a plug in for your WordPress blog called “PodPress” that will help you to make sure the ID3 tags are correct for the podcasting on your blog. ID3 tags are just like META tags for your website or your blog, and use keywords that should be researched in the same way that you’d research them for another form of traffic.
What this article has done is really scratch the surface about podcasting. It’s just a great traffic source that will increase your squeeze page traffic and ultimately your list. Don’t overlook it!
When spending a lot of money on pleasure components like an iPod, life gets a huge kink in it when iPod breaks down. Everyone knows the convenience of the iPod makes listening to music easy when doing practically anything. Instead of going out and buying a new iPod, consider trying some other ideas. Here are some tips that may put the dance back in your step, letting you avoid repairing your iPod by a professional iPod repairman.
First, you should obviously use a hard protective case to avoid scratching the screen of your iPod. The hard cases are better because if you drop your iPod while in a hard case in water, your iPod is usually protected in up to three feet. Plus, if you drop your iPod, a hard case help protect your device from sustaining damage to its internal devices, which are necessary for proper function, and external cosmetic damage to your iPod.
Second, Dont use your pockets, backpacks, or a purse to carry your iPod tunes. LDC screens are pliable under pressure, which is easily created if you bend down, sit down, sit on your backpack or purse or if you fall down. This will put pressure on your iPod, which can bend or crack your LCD screen. You might also think of your screen when left in your car such as extreme heat or cold.
Next, you should always avoid pulling, wrapping, or causing any other type of tension to the cord attached to your headphones. This can break your headphone sockets. Avoid letting your wires get tangled up when you are not using your iPod. You would not want a short in your headphone wires. It would also be totally inconvenient having to untangle your headphones each time you go to use them. Another tip is if your iPod does not boot up as it usually does, you might try charging it. Sometimes, when you are to low on juice your iPod cant boot up.
Also, when you buy your iPod, you could also purchase an extra battery and battery replacement kit. This is ideal for when your battery dies. You dont have to go anywhere to replace it. The average iPod battery takes about three hours to fully charge. What if your iPod would not shut down? You have checked that the hold switch is turned off, and you know your battery is fully charged, and then you need to reset your iPod, deplete your battery all the way, and then update your iPod.
Another tip is that you should also check for regular updates for your iPod, just like your home computer. You want it to continue to work properly. If the LDC screen on the front of your iPod shows a not so happy face, this means that you should check that the requirements for your iPod match your computer. If so, try to restore your iPod by putting it in disc mode and then restore. Remember restoring your iPod is not the same as updating. Make sure you back up your music files before you restore. To update plug your iPod into your computer and down load the newest version of iPod updater. You could try plugging your iPod into a different fire wire or USB port connecting to your computer. Then restart your computer, and reinstall your iPod or iTunes software.
To check your iPods hard drive for errors, run the scan disk feature. If the face with an upside down smile comes up then the problem cant be fixed at home.
Last, if you are constantly on the go, running, skating, dancing, and your iPod is always being jarred around, you might have a problem. Your iPods internal protection function will come on, which will freeze your iPod up. Fix your frozen iPod, hold the select and the menu button at the same time. If you have an older iPod, hold the play button down for a few moments, which should repair your iPod issue.
These are only a few basic ways to avoid iPod repairs. For a more in-depth look into solutions, most companies have websites, which corresponds with the brand of iPod you own. If you iPod is still under warranty and you are still having problems, return your iPod to the manufacture that can exchange it for a new one.

The Association of Independent Music (AIM) is holding a special event to celebrate 50 years of successful independent music which will include a gig, a five part television series, a one off auction on ebay and the release of a double CD full of “independent” covers. Artists including The Prodigy, The Charlatans and Maximo Park have all given their backing to the cause and plan to donate songs for the album. Songs to be covered include Joy Division’s Love Will Tear Us Apart, PIL’s Public Image and Ghost Town by The Specials.
Independents Day marks the anniversary of Chris Blackwell and Graeme Goodall’s indie label, Island Records. The Jamaican-born label signed giants U2 before selling to Polygram in 1989, a trend which many independent labels followed. Creation and Factory records disappeared in the 1990’s whilst others folded through a calamity of errors from over expansion to cashflow problems.
Independent music is responsible for more than 25% of the UK’s music scene and is claimed to have pioneered the music industry for many years. Alison Wenham, Chairman for AIM stated that [independents] had been “at the forefront of every single new musical movement over the years.”
For proof of this, just take a look at every popular music scene over the last 50 years: There was the DIY punk scene in the seventies, the indie guitar sounds from New Order in the eighties and the massive dance music boom in the nineties.
Today, we are seeing the independent label make a comeback. Domino Records have given us two recent chart toppers; Scottish band, Franz Ferdinand and northerners, Arctic Monkeys. The internet has provided a new platform with which to promote this music. Sites such as Myspace, Youtube and Facebook all promote bands young and old, signed and unsigned for general consumption. These social networking sites have allowed users to access new music much easier than ever before with some 40% of users embedding music within their pages.
Russell Hart, chief executive of Entertainment Media Research added “Social networks are fundamentally changing the way we discover music… the dynamics of democratisation, word of mouth recommendation and instant purchase challenge the established order and offer huge opportunities to forward thinking business.”
Local label, Signature Tune is making the most of these sites and one of their bands, Lakes is reaping the benefits of using an independent label. Scott Byatt, the band’s drummer said “As a band on an independent label, advances in communication and technology mean we can communicate with bands and promoters the world over helping us network and get shows with ease… Our CDs can be bought in many high street stores and our tracks can be downloaded from iTunes, once again without the help of a major.”
Radiohead were perhaps the first big band to see the change in direction and act upon it. After the end of their contract with music giants EMI, the band went solo with the release of their latest album, In Rainbows. The album was released as a digital download in October 2007, allowing customers to pay as much, or as little as they liked for it. The group took ownership of their own songs and released ten tracks online more than one month before the tangible album was released in the shops.
Front man for the band, Thom Yorke noted the growing number of pirate copies of their music being appearing online and in an interview with Wired he said, “every record for the last four – including my solo record – has been leaked. So the idea was like, we’ll leak it then.” Yorke’s attempt to beat the pirates seem to have worked. On average, the electronic download sold for 4 GBP. Not bad considering you could download it for free if you were feeling too tight to pay.
The return to indie worked wonders for Radiohead. Although the downloads from the website, inrabows were not counted in the album charts, the band did manage to create enough hype and speculation around the release of their album that when the CD actually hit the shops, it reached number one in the UK album chart, the United World Chart and the US Billboard 200.
Other groups may do well to take note of this action when considering future releases. Of the music industry, and in particular their ex record label, Yorke added “What we would like is the old EMI back again, the nice genteel arms manufacturers who treated music [as] a nice side project who weren’t too bothered about the shareholders. Ah well, not much chance of that.”
Au contraire, EMI boss, Guy Hands is keen to seize upon the opportunities presented by smaller, independent labels. These labels have always maintained a stronger working relationship with their artists and are much more keen to try their hands at new promotional techniques. With the renaissance of DIY music and bands creating music for music’s sake, independent labels cannot be ignored. EMI declared that they are planning on working like a larger version of the indie label, with many smaller labels working under their umbrella.
So they may be more willing to try new techniques, but the problem of shareholders still remains. Wenham continues, “If you have shareholders to please, inevitably it becomes about making music from the music.” Indie music is very much about the music and as long as the shareholders give the smaller labels a wide berth, we should continue to see more impressive acts pushing the scene forward.

My internet connection was out all last evening and I became astonished at just how much I rely on it day to day. I mean, I’m plenty old enough to have lived in a world where people didn’t even have computers in their home, let alone 24 hour broadband connections. Now it seems that practically everything I do involves the need for some level of connection to the net. Even passive entertainment, like movies and TV, i tend to download from iTunes, so I couldn’t even pull new content to watch while I waited for the problem to be fixed by my service provider. Thanks to my iPhone and the AT&T Edge network, it is unlikely I’ll ever be completely disconnected. My email and web browsing can be done just as well, albeit slowly, on my iPhone, lacking nothing. That is, of course, if you don’t count the need to download anything.
So there I sat feeling totally lost. I was in the middle of updating my primary website and pages were not properly uploaded to the server. Now, even if others could continue to visit my page, while I was offline, they may have found blank pages and error codes instead of useful content. To a new visitor, this type of thing could completely erode any potential trust in your site or service. It could mean lost revenue.
I remember when I first got broadband back in Vegas in the late 1990’s, it seemed there was still plenty to do without the need of it. Of course, in that day, I had yet to start my website or the others I am now building. Today we live in an age where a business in its entirety can be run on the web. How dangerous is that when the fate of your enterprise could be in the hands of your service provider? Worse still, what if your fate is in the hands of cables and technology laid down over a decade ago?
I’ve read that some internet entrepreneurs will choose to have both DSL and cable as a contingency against just this sort of thing. I have also read that many will use multiple web hosting services for their different sites so that they all don’t end up on one server. Should it crash, so too would any income they might be generating. With multiple hosting services, there may be a slightly greater expense, but if one income generating sight goes down, others may still be bringing in the bacon.
I’ve only recently started branching out into using more than one web hosting service. I already see the value in it. In the absence of a reliable cable connection, and with the convenience of still being connected via my iPhone when it is out, I am also starting to see the value of having more than one way to access the net and my business. As you grow you internet enterprises, it might be better to consider implementing these strategies sooner rather than later. The alternative is that a simple outage could leave you cut off from potential revenue sources.

In the age of portable mp3 players, iPods have taken the world by storm. A new generation is produced every year for millions of Apple fans around the globe. As a result of iPods popularity, entrepreneurs in China have been making copies of these popular products since the dawn of MP3s. Are these iPod clones worthwhile, or should the buyer beware?
Firstly, it is important to look at an aspect of Chinese culture which leads to copies of popular products. Some people believe it is unethical to work from other peoples ideas. However, traditional Chinese belief dictates that when something is created, it is other people’s responsibility to improve on it. Here’s an example I’ve read before: say that someone paints the Mona Lisa. Chinese custom would dictate that it is others responsibilities to see what flaws the previous object held, and how to fix those flaws while adding new value. Thus, they would attempt to make a better Mona Lisa for people to enjoy. I’m not saying that the Chinese manufacturers are motivated entirely by this good will, for obviously profit is very important, but this analogy helps explain why copies are so prevalent in China.
Anyway, on to the products themselves. I’ll try to be brief about the Pros and Cons.
Cons
Lack of album management – Because they are plug and play, you have to drag music into the memory manually. It is still possible to create albums by creating the folders manually and putting the music in by yourself.
Unappealing song user interface – On an iPod, when you browse songs, it shows a beautiful screen with the album cover and a white background. On a generic player, most likely it will have a dark blue background with the title and artist of the song scrolling past.
Movies must be converted – Most generic players have to play movies in the AMV format. In small screens, the format doesn’t matter too much for quality, but it is a hassle to convert. Also, AMV converters are available for free online. However, iPods require their own special format too, and they offer this format only from their own move database online (though it isn’t free).
One speed tracking – This doesn’t mean much for most songs, but in general, fast forward and rewind move at one speed (unlike iPods, in which it speeds up over time.) This leads to problems in long songs if you want to skip ahead.
Pros
FM Radio – Some generic mp3s come with an included FM radio, which is a $50 addition to an Apple iPod. Look for this feature.
Voice Recorder – Some generic mp3s come with an included Voice Recorder, which is another $50 accessory for an iPod. Look for this feature if you shop for genericd mp3 players.
No iTunes, and the errors that come with it – Most generics offer simple drag and drop service, so you don’t have to worry about losing your collection
Same or better audio and video quality – Audio and video quality for good generics is the same as for an iPod.
It’s less than half the price – Expect to pay around $60 for a 2gb, $75 for a 4gb, and $90 for an 8gb generic player, if you want reliability and quality. You can also get cheaper generics for as low as $40 if you’re willing to take risks and reduced quality.
In conclusion, I believe that generics actually are a better deal. They offer a bulk of the same features, as well as some additions, for some minor sacrifices. In addition, they are half the price. When you’re shopping, check to see what quality of mp3 is being sold. Some helpful clues are;
- If they use stock photos of actual iPod nanos, they are probably low quality
- If they advertise as an iPod nano and not as a generic, they are probably low quality.
That said, there are many unscrupulous buyers out there. Always use a safe payment method like PayPal and look for any proof you can find that these mp3s are the best value for your money. Also important is to look for a reliable warranty, which some companies now offer. I, myself, offer a free one year warranty and will be adding a video going through all the features of the Dopple, my china manufactured player, on my website www.inspirebolt.com. I’ve tried to be as honest as possible during this article about the advantages and disadvantages of each, so I advise you to ask yourself what you want in an mp3 player, and get exactly what you want.
Kevin Barry owns www.InspireBolt.com, an ecommerce website selling Dopple mp3 players. He believes honesty is the best selling method, and happy customers will tell their friends!
After recording over 200 podcasts for the Recognized Expert Marketing Show, I’ve learned a thing or two about creating a successful show. And by successful, I mean a show that has a loyal following of dedicated listeners.
After years of trail and error, here’s what we learned about producing a show that people want to subscribe to.
Make Your Podcast Thematic
If you want to host a successful podcast or Internet radio show, your show must be thematic. In our case, the Recognized Expert Marketing Show focuses on marketing. Our listeners know that they can count on hearing a program that’s going to teach them how to market themselves better.
We are not trying to target people who are interested in fiction or cooking or travel. The show is about marketing and the people who listen to the show are there to learn about marketing. Don’t try to be all things to all people. It doesn’t work.
Invite A Quality Guest
There are pros and cons to having a guest on your show. For example, a well known guest will attract listeners. They will add credibility to your show and give you someone to banter with.
The best reason for having a quality guest on your show is the information and experiences they provide that you can’t offer. A popular and quality guest can be a godsend for any podcast.
The downside to having a guest on your show is the unknown. Unless you’ve heard them on another show, you really don’t know what to expect when the microphone goes live.
In order to ease my concerns I contact every guest on the telephone before I schedule them on my podcast. You can get a pretty good idea as to how a guest is going to act from a simple telephone call, but not always.
So, should you have guests on your podcast? The answer is, “It depends.” You’re the most qualified person to make that decision.
With the basics out of the way, let’s look at what the format of a thematic show with guest looks like.
Provide A Musical Introduction
Music is a great way to get your audience in the mood for your show. It’s also a way to create continuity for your show. The trick with music is to keep it short and make sure it represents the mood you want to create for your podcast.
Introduce Yourself and the Show
Don’t leave new listeners wondering. Tell them straight away who you are and what the show is about.
Drive Listeners To Your Website
I didn’t do this for the first 100 shows and it proved to be an expensive mistake. When we started the Recognized Expert Marketing Show, it was only available on our website. Today it is syndicated on over 80 websites including iTunes.
The good news is 90% of our listeners don’t listen to the Recognized Expert Marketing Show on our website. The bad news is 90% of our listeners don’t listen to the Recognized Expert Marketing Show on our website. Here’s why that’s bad news.
Since our listeners are not listening to my podcast on our website, we can’t encourage them to sign-up on our list, click on our ads or purchase our products. That’s a problem you want to avoid from the start.
Give your listeners a reason to come to your website and offer them a bonus for going. We offer ebooks, reports, articles and other great marketing tips that are only available on our website. This is the single most important thing you must do on your podcast.
Introduce Your Topic
Project your excitement about the show and tell your listeners what they can expect from your show. Make a big promise and keep it.
Introduce Your Guest
Once your listeners have been persuaded to listen to your show, introduce your guest. You want to make a big deal over your guest for the benefit of your audience and your guest. You really can’t go too far.
Get to the Content Quickly
The fastest way to build a loyal following is to provide great content right out of the gate. Follow through on the promise you made at the beginning of the show and have them reaching for a pencil and paper.
Take A Break
I schedule a break halfway through my show. This gives me an opportunity to reintroduce my guest and remind my listeners to go to my website.
Recap The Show
Give your listeners a synopsis of what they learned and remind them why they listen to your show. Encourage them to tell their friends about your show and visit your website for more information. Do these things and you will quickly have your own successful podcast.
